Conference Presentations
The Department of Nursing created a Course Design Team and user friendly templates for developing online courses RN to BSN and BSN to DNP programs. The course design makes it easier for the student to identify the course and module objectives, assigned reading and videos. The course templates increase consistency throughout the program thereby increasing student satisfaction as evidenced by increase in course evaluation scores.
The Institute for Economic and Social Development (INDES) at the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) delivers a variety of online courses targeting the public sector in Latin America. These courses are offered in two main formats: traditional instructor-led courses (in Moodle) and MOOCs (through edX). INDES serves as a hub for many distinct departments. Course design and development activities are distributed between various professionals. The QM rubric has taken an important role in providing a benchmark for quality control.
Do you think that creating a multimedia presentation for your course will take a lot of time, effort, and media production skill? What if you could create a presentation using your mobile device and free/inexpensive software? In this workshop, participants will be presented with four types of multimedia presentations, as well as three types of video presentations. Then using best practices we will develop quality multimedia presentations.
Don't miss this interactive session to demonstrate tools that specifically address Standard 6.2. Learn how to make your course interactive, increase instructor presence at no cost, and look at options for authentic assessment. Bring your devices to play along while we learn together!
Description
This dialogue session gives participants an opportunity to grapple with large-scale campus buy-in and implementation of QM with campus community and faculty. University leaders support infusing standards but struggle with concerns of academic freedom and, thus, often do not impose standards.
Learning Objectives: After this session, participants will be able to . . .
Convene members on participants' campuses to facilitate adoption of QM.
What happens after the QM review? How does a campus go from QM to total QA? Hear how campus-wide quality assurance is maintained at NMSU-A. Topics will include ensuring the quality of courses, of delivery, and of master courses and providing campus-wide equivalent services for online students.
Wouldn’t you love students to follow your online course as closely as sports fans follow their favorite teams? Learn strategies and tools used by sportscasters that online instructors can use to increase student engagement.
This session addresses the question: “What activities can learners engage in to improve distinct brain areas and processes?” Just like endurance, strength, and agility; your memory, perception, and cognition can be improved through exercise. Many of us are fascinated with puzzles such as Sudoku and crosswords. In addition to releasing dopamine, puzzles have been shown to improve specific areas of the brains. In this session, participants will solve different types of puzzles that stimulate distinct brain areas and processes in the broad areas of memory, perception, and cognition.
Walk around the edge of the QM Research pool to see what it looks like - and then dive in for a true understanding of what's under the surface. Get comfortable in the water so you can take a dip whenever you like.

Interested in "new" ways to boost learner engagement and success in your course? Have you heard about Open Educational Resources but wish to know more? Then this session is for you! Come explore the what, the why, and the how of OER. You will leave the session with a plan and a list of OER resources.
High Impact Practices (HIPs) have been getting a lot of attention recently. And why not? With data linking them to increased retention, persistence, and course satisfaction (Kuh, 2008) HIPs seem like a guaranteed ticket to academic success! However, rallying behind one or more HIP can seem like a daunting task when it comes to online education.
In this session we will discuss strategies used to engage faculty and staff in designing courses that align with the QM Rubric including professional development workshops that address Standards 2, 4, and 5. We will share how we are measuring success in terms of engagement and course quality.
Faculty responsibilities in higher ed continue to grow. At the same time, there are more instructional designers in higher ed than ever before. How can these two groups of professionals collaborate for a more productive and higher-quality course design - making the best use their time?
This round-table discussion will address commonly asked questions about research related to Quality Matters. Including information about the QM Research Toolkit, this session may be just what you need to find, use, or begin research that can inform decisions about your QM implementation.
Evaluate the impact of Quality Matters on student engagement in online nursing courses. Student engagement will be compared in traditionally designed online nursing courses versus Quality Matters-designed online nursing courses. This research study is a retrospective data analysis.
Our university launched several initiatives to improve online education quality including adopting the Quality Matters (QM) standards for online course design, and creation of the Faculty Fellows (2017-2012). Two new initiatives are featured: (1) Quarterly Applying Quality Matters Rubric (APPQMR) Workshops and, (2) A series of 40 workshops offered weekly focusing on assessment, accessibility and technical skills. The establishment of these categories was created to support a QM based Master Course Template for the Learning Management System. The outcomes of the workshops have been positive.

Even experienced online instructors find it overwhelming after the first QM training (e.g., APPQMR). This study explores the challenges and best practices of scaffolding novice QM instructors as they design their courses. It provides valuable insights on what training and support work and why.
