Solving the Math Problem: Remediating Students (and Courses) by Training Teachers

Description

What do you do when your math courses are your lowest-performing courses AND are inaccessible? Do you rewrite them? Do you remediate them? Do you focus on instructor training? This session will show you how to do all of the above

When faced with obsolete Flash presentations, low course averages, and accessibility issues, one large K-12 institution took a leap and trained its math teachers to create high-quality screencasts using pen input technology. Learn how they motivated the teachers to complete the 6-week training, incorporated QM principles into best practices and evaluation of products, promoted accessibility with a few simple video creation guidelines, and used the training to identify promising SMEs for further projects. Data from surveys, video views, and courses will be shared to demonstrate the impact of this professional development.

Participants will learn how to apply a rubric for evaluating screencast quality, best practices for accessible screencasts, ideas for supporting teachers in screencasting design, and lessons learned from a first-time, large-scale implementation of screencasting training. Presenters will share rubrics, evaluation criteria, and training materials.
