Conference Presentations
Come join Dr Yaping Gao, QM's Senior Academic Director of Programs & Services, and Melissa Poole, Director of Quality Assurance, to learn about the benefits of implementing QM and share the challenges you are facing implementing QM at your institution. The facilitators will also share QM's recently developed candidacy approach that prepares institutions for Program Certification, a new program QM recently launched to help institutions initiate and implement quality assurance beyond the course level.
The trajectory of QM-focused research has been from describing experience and observations (such as impact on satisfaction), to exploring narrowing foci (such as interaction), to applying established educational frameworks (such as TPACK and CoI), to correlating data (such as grades). The result is a rich foundational body of research, along with actionable information on the complexities of educational research. To encourage researchers to benefit from these foundations, a framework for finding and using evidence on QM impact will be introduced during this poster session.
As a new subscriber to Quality Matters, we were interested in helping faculty and instructors who teach online use the QM rubrics in course development and revision in nonthreatening
ways. Pilots occurred in the Graduate Program in Nursing, Graduate Program in Education, and in a selection of online summer offerings in the Undergraduate program. This presentation will demonstrate the many ways that institutions might introduce the QM rubrics to their faculty in supportive and non-threatening ways.
Captioning video content can be an expensive and challenging endeavor, which can be difficult to accomplish on a large scale. To meet Standard 8.3, "The course provides alternative means of access to course materials," Oregon State University Ecampus developed an internal process to caption video and lecture content for courses going through a Quality Matters review. This session will focus on the process for easily and affordably creating captions for media.
This poster session will cover a 2015-2016 pilot in which 9 California State University campuses participated to establish formal course reviews through a CSU cadre of certified reviewers. Feedback from coordinators, instructors, and peer-reviewers, as well as recognition strategies and a student feedback instrument will be shared. Additionally, two campuses, San José State and Fresno State will share their activities to train and support faculty in preparing their courses for formal certification.
Have you attended the APPQMR workshop? Have you applied QM Standards in your own courses? If not, come and hear about the insider's secret regarding the workshop and their perspectives about QM Standards and the benefits of QM. If you have, come and share your experience with others who are passionate about QM. The presenters are eager to share the results of a study on the impact of APPQMR training with you.
Deciding where to start when making online materials accessible is half the battle. Pitt Online has created a tool, the accessibility matrix, which can be used to help your unit or university make those decisions. This presentation is about what elements of making course materials accessible are included in the matrix and how decision makers can use it effectively.
If you have been involved in a Quality Matters (QM) review, you know how detailed and thorough these need to be. During our reviews, we started to notice that "course alignment" is probably the predominant aspect of most of the essential standards that the QM rubric measures, and that it is not always easy inferring the intentions of the course designer or subject matter expert (SME), when designing the course materials and assessments. In other words, the journey of mapping the alignment between course objectives, modular objectives, course materials and assessments is not an easy one.
"Mix It Up!" will be a real time blended presentation demonstrating the combination of emerging technologies that can be used to provide professional development (PD) for faculty teaching blended and online courses meeting many expectations of the Quality Matters framework. Tools for sharing content for online learning that are engaging and interactive will be shared as well as our successes, challenges, and lessons learned from using the tools.
What does an instructor do when an IHE has no Instructional Designer on staff?
Learn how QM standards influenced the design of a new, innovative educator preparation program. This is the IHE's only fully-hybrid designed program that is aligned to QM standards.
We'll discuss how this program has already influened other academic departments use of QM standards; as well as, share how Quality Matters has influenced both hybrid and fully F2F course design and delivery.
Implementing Quality Matters for your institution may initially seem like a clear and easy choice. If you're like us, you want to ensure the quality and continual improvement of your online and hybrid course offerings. You may have reviewed QM alternatives and considered feedback from faculty who have experience with other models. Now that you've chosen to pursue the implementation of QM at your institution, maybe you've realized that there's more to this implementation process than you initially thought.
The University of Mississippi Medical Center is leveraging its first QM certification in 2016 to scale across the institution. Through a cross-campus partnership, research-based metrics and processes are being developed using Kirkpatrick's four stage training model to pair digital credentialing with learning milestones achieved by QM faculty cohorts. Utilizing both quantitative and qualitative methods, the two-year project will empower the team to relay to administrators effective strategies for implementing future endeavors involving scale and behavioral change.
The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) has become a leading source of financing of social and economical development in the Latin America and Caribbean (LAC) region. One special activity of the bank is its support to social and economic development in LAC through distance learning. The IDB has become a leader in professional development in LAC, capitalizing on the knowledge and experience of the Bank in the region.
QM for Students enables you to integrate QM into your curriculum. Hear how your students can benefit from discounted subscriptions as part of the QM for Students program and how faculty can attain the new role of QM Coach.
Come join Dr Deb Adair, QM's Executive Director, and Dr Yaping Gao, QM's Senior Academic Director of Programs and Services, to learn what initiatives QM has been involved with on the international front, and to share ideas on how QM can expand its impact and influence in non-English speaking regions. This session will also serve as the inauguration meeting for the iQM Association, a group of QM advocates with foreign language proficiency and cultural awareness. For those interested and qualified, it's not too late to join the iQM Association.
This 50-minute session is designed for faculty, staff, and administrators relatively new to QM. Come join Dr Yaping Gao, QM's Senior Academic Director of Programs and Services, and Brenda Boyd, Director of Professional Development, for a quick introduction of QM, how it works, what's in it for institutions, and how QM can support efforts to help students succeed.
