Fishing in the Lake for Data on Quality Engagement

Description

Research shows that a higher intensity of engagement leads to greater performance in online classes. But how can we verify this at our own institutions? What types of data can support this research and how do we access it?

The Community College of Philadelphia has recently built a data lake which allows us to access true learning analytics by collating data from the Canvas LMS and the Banner SIS. This research project uses the data lake to verify the increased course success rates based on course engagement. Specifically, the authors address the following hypothesis: the more activities and the more types of activities in an online course lead to higher performance for new first-time students.

This presentation will provide an overview of the data lake, provide results of the data analysis, and situate the findings within the current body of literature. Other confounding variables will be addressed. Participants will learn how to begin using learning analytics to increase quality assurance in online courses.
