Designing Equitable Assessments & Grading Practices
This interactive workshop will allow you to reflect on and share current grading goals and assessment practices. During the workshop, strategies and approaches for designing equitable grading practices will be shared with participants, including providing feedback without grades, allowing for multiple attempts, token systems, alternative grading approaches, and much more.
- Reflect on goals for grading and assessments.
- Examine equitable strategies and approaches to minimize grading bias, increase grading accuracy, and improve student motivation and learning.
- Engage in self-review of course assessments and grading.
- Identify areas to apply equitable grading strategies and approaches.
Ability to read and write standard business English.

About the facilitator — Nicole Messier is the Senior Instructional Designer at the Instructional Design and Media Production Studio at UIC. Prior to joining UIC, she was an instructional designer at Rasmussen University. Nicole Messier has over twenty-five years of teaching, training, and design experience. Nicole brings her passion for curriculum development and education reform to every course, project, and training she develops, particularly regarding creating equitable opportunities for all students. Nicole Messier has a M.A. in Curriculum and Instruction from Saint Xavier University, a B.A. in Education and Public Policy from Ashford University, and a Certification for the Fundamentals of Online Teaching from University of Wisconsin-Madison.
