Applying the QM Rubric

(NOTE: Quality Matters Peer Reviewer Certification is now a two-part process. The Applying the QM Rubric workshop replaces the practical content of the previous Peer Reviewer Training. If your goal is to become a Quality Matters Certified Peer Reviewer, this is the training you should register for as a first step. Upon completing this training, whether online or F2F, you will have the option to participate in a one-week online Peer Reviewer Certification Module if you are a current online instructor. There will be NO additional charge for the Peer Reviewer Certification module if you are currently enrolled in an online Applying workshop or have recently participated in a F2F Applying workshop delivered by Quality Matters at your institution.)

Online course quality matters to faculty, to students, and to institutions committed to excellence in teaching and learning. Built on the review and application of research literature and best practices in distance learning, Quality Matters provides a toolset and process to ensure quality in online courses through the use of a peer course review process.

The Applying the Quality Matters Rubric workshop introduces you to the Quality Matters (QM) project and rubric. Your facilitator will guide you through a series of activities designed to promote your understanding of the quality standards and to give you hands-on experience in applying these standards to the review of an online course.

Target Audience: Faculty members, instructional designers, and administrators who want to learn to use the Rubric for course review purposes.

Upon completion of the workshop, you will be able to

  • Identify the critical elements of the QM project and rubric.
  • Explain the QM rubric scoring system.
  • Use the QM Rubric to review an online course.
  • Make decisions on whether or not a set of given scenarios meet the QM rubric standards with a score of 85% or better.
  • Showcase aspects of your own online course that now meet the QM standard(s) or that need improvement in order to meet the standards.

What will I do? Complete the activities in Modules 1-6, which include learning about QM, applying the rubric in a review of an online course, participating in discussions and making decisions about whether given scenarios meet the rubric standards.

What recognition will I receive? You will receive a certificate of completion documenting that you have successfully completed the Applying the QM Rubric workshop.

(NOTE: If you intend, and are eligible, to become a QM Certified Peer Reviewer, you should proceed into the online one-week Peer Reviewer Certification Module, as per instructions from your trainer. You must be an teach online to become a QM Certified Peer Reviewer.)

The Applying the QM Rubric workshop is offered online and is 2 weeks in length. Past participants indicate that a total of 6-8 hours is required to complete the workshop. Fees are $200 for QM Subscribers and $325 for Non-Subscribers.

This workshop can also be provided as a full day F2F session at your institution. Please see this document for fee schedule, or click the "Request Onsite Training" link on the Training page for more information.
